Christian Dior earned his place as one of the 20th century's greatest couturiers over a working life of just ten years. Born in 1905 he was 30 when first started his design career selling clothing sketches after studying political science and serving in the military. Following WWII he set up his own fashion house and his first collection in 1947 created a sensation in a world still recovering from wartime deprivations. His designs were extravagant, feminine and exuded a sense of luxury thought decadent at the time. His signature styles were dubbed the 'New Look' and before long all of Paris was wearing his figure-8 style with prominent shoulders, small waist and accentuated hips. The rest of the Western fashion world soon flocked to the new guru of style and each subsequent collection was widely anticipated.
Dior was one of the pioneers of product licensing allowing makers of items such as stockings, sunglasses, leather goods, shoes and of course, perfumes to collaborate in the mystique of the brand. Christian Dior died at the age of 52 but not before passing the company's design responsibilities to Yves St Laurent whose own genius established the House of Dior at the centre of the world fashion and accessories with its unmistakable sense of style and elegance. Christian Dior's move into beauty products began as early as 1947 with the launch of the fragrance Miss Dior and soon expanded to a full range of perfumes including the classics Poison, J'Adore and Dune. The House also makes a limited selection of make up for eyes, face, lips and nails and a skincare range including cleansers, hydration and suncare.
